These live oak trees grew from acorns planted by Bishop George F. Pierce, first president of Wesleyan College, in 1836. They are believed to be the oldest trees in Macon.
The trees are north of their native range limited to the Coastal Plain of Georgia. Live oaks are commonly found 60 miles south of Macon.
In 1937, the Georgia Legislature declared live oak as the State Tree as requested by the Edmund Burke Chapter, Daughter of the American Revolution.
Timbers and frames for the USS Constitution, "Old Ironsides" were cut from Georgia live oaks. Built at Edmond Hartt's shipyard in Boston, MA, Constitution was launched October 21, 1797
